Air Conditioning

Around 85% of all new cars sold are fitted with Air-Conditioning systems as standard. Therefore, the servicing of such systems has become a much more regular fixture on the calendar of our activities.

It is recommended that car owners have their air-conditioning units fumigated every twelve months and completely cleaned and serviced every two years. What many people don't know is that the air-conditioning system also acts as a dehumidifier and can be used in damp months to quickly clear steamed windows.

Why should I have it serviced?

Your air-conditioning unit loses on average fifteen percent of its refrigeration gas capacity every year. Not only that, but a poorly performing system will cause the engine to use more fuel and build up an amount of fungus, bacteria and micro-organisms, which grow inside the evaporator cove and can cause nasty smells and allergic reactions such as sneezing, coughing and irritation to the eyes. Pollen filters should be replaced as specified by the manufacturer but checked when the system is serviced.

What can I do?

Make sure that you use your air conditioning system for at least ten minutes every week. This will circulate gas and important oils and reduce the amount of gas that is lost through dry seals. On hot days, close all windows, turn temperature down, and select recirculation on the controls to trap the cool air in the car. When using the system as a dehumidifier, choose your temperature, select de-mist, making sure recirculation is turned off and air conditioning is on - this will clear the windows much faster.
